Virtual Freight Inspections

Virtual Freight Inspections (VFI) began in 2004 as an idea by partner Donald Barranco with 27 years of motor carrier industry experience. He and Matt Hakes, the original partners at VFI, have developed a unique inspection process and a world class company and both are proud residents of Menomonee Falls WI. VFI has flourished from a small family-run business to a unique and innovative dot-com.

VFI’s vision was to lead the motor carrier industry into the paperless era and to use technology and sophisticated data gathering processes in resolving customer issues that may be related to loss or damage in transportation. The two partners who began VFI were uniquely paired, one with an intimate knowledge of the LTL industry and its processes and the other with a process approach to data gathering and website construction. Their plan was to create a website (www.vfinspections.com) that functioned as an entire company.

Customers would order and retrieve inspection reports. Inspectors would complete the reports online, triggering the invoicing and accounting processes—thus producing a 100% paperless process. This process and VFI as a company have fit like “hand in glove” as carriers have upgraded their OS&D and claims processing systems.

VFI has been there to help carriers cut clerical cost and provide a superior product. The inspection reports are clear, easy to read, factual and detailed. VFI has shrunk the turnaround time for an inspection report from weeks to days and even hours.
At its inception, the company served three states with only a couple “Virtual Inspectors.” The following year, the operation grew, accommodating 15 states; in 2006, VFI expanded to serve 22 states. VFI now has over 180 inspectors in 48 states and will soon serve Canada.

With the expansion, the infrastructure of the company changed. Partners Don Barranco and Matt Hakes promoted Northeast inspector and Regional Manager, Tina Jordan, to Vice President in January of 2008. Tina then hired, trained, and developed five regional managers who currently assist in maintaining the high quality standards of VFI by reviewing agent reports, monitoring turnaround time, and facilitating the RUSH order process.

VFI’s goal is to become the world leader in providing thorough freight inspection reports through an environmentally friendly paperless system. VFI’s process is standardized for every agent in the country. So as a customer, you can be assured that you will receive the same complete and accurate information whether you order an inspection in Denver or Detroit, Milwaukee or Miami. In addition, whether you order inspections in a centralized location or at each individual terminal throughout the country, VFI can set up a customized, personalized login system so that your claims examiners in Memphis can view the same information on line as your OS&D clerk in Montgomery—without having to incur clerical costs to transfer information from one location to another.
